A sense of freedom

FROM THE SANCTUARY MADONNA DEL SASSO
TO THE VALLEY OF ARNO

One-way itinerary. When in Florence participants are released from the bikes.

This itinerary develops on the foothills of Mt. Giovi, the peak which towers over the Mugello area and the valley of Arno, 15-20 km north-east of Florence. A route winding among chestnut forests, hop hornbeams, Turkey oaks and the wild hills which make up the Local Protected National Reserve, with the suggestive sanctuary Madonna del Sasso as its symbolic centre.

Below 500 m the vegetation gently leaves space to vineyards, olive groves and cypresses. Here the bike trail crosses a rural territory dotted with towers, ancient manor houses, 16th century villas and romanesque parishes, a precious historical testimony and a beautiful synthesis of the magnificent Tuscany landscape. This is the heart of “Chianti Rufina”, a winemaking area well known since the Renaissance.

MONTE SENARIO-FIESOLE-FLORENCE
17 MI ONLY FLAT AND DOWNHILL ROADS
One-way itinerary. When in Florence participants are released from the bikes

This is mostly a downhill and flat itinerary, leading from the Convent of Montesenario (on top of the mountain, 2680 ft a.s.l.) to the city centre of Florence, through the stunning countryside of Fiesole. Florence Cathedral and its towering Dome are at the centre of the journey and our final destination.

First we’ll encounter the century-old fir trees that guard an ancient hermitage and the wide slopes of Mugello with the Apennines in the background; then the olive trees, the cypresses and the unique rural landscape of the hills of Fiesole. Finally the Arno river, which takes us into the heart of the city, where eventually we can see at first hand what we had been admiring from afar. A unique emotion and an unforgettable synthesis of Tuscany’s treasures.
